In kickboxing, a pair of padded kickboxing gloves is crucial to protect your hands and knuckles from the intensity of the punches that you will throw. In karate, practitioners and instructors have a serious take on wearing the proper karate suit. It is a way of showing your respect to your sensei, fellow karatekas and to karate itself. And in kung fu, it is an imperative to wear kung fu shoes to protect the miniscule bones in your foot.
Kung fu shoes, or any martial arts shoes, serves as a convenience to both you and your sparring partner. It acts as a protective safety gear when you unintentionally kick someone in the head or kick someone in the face. There are actually two reasons why you should really consider wearing sparring shoes. For one, if you do a series of practice drills and you are barefooted, there is a great chance that you will walk out of the dojo with your feet badly bruised. Now, bruises are the price you pay for any contact sport but if you wear even a bit of protection then you can at least avoid being badly hurt. Second, the foot has so many miniscule bones and almost no fat. So that means that it doesn’t have any protection and the blood flow is weak. A good pair of padded martial arts shoes should be enough to protect it.
Martial arts sparring shoes greatly improves your traction on the floor. You are stable even when you are doing your workouts and drills. If you train Kung Fu, the extra traction will be really useful as kung fu movements can really get acrobatic. You would be surprised at how attractive it feels to perform the kung fu techniques without the fear of slipping. Plus, they are usually made of light weight materials like cotton and foam. That’s why they are very comfortable as they provide the necessary aeration for flexibility and an excellent performance. And since most sparring moves involve striking with the top of the foot, the foam-like material will provide cushion for your feet and ankle joints.
Kung fu shoes are available in a wide variety of choices. Some of the famous and trusted brands are Feiyue and Adidas. Cotton-soled kung fu shoes are very cheap and very comfortable. They do not scuff hardwood floors or tear canvas mats because their bottoms are very soft and smooth. However, they tend to slip off during kicking, tumbling and jumping exercises. They also easily absorb dirt and water. Feiyue shoes are the top choice of martial arts practitioners these days. They are made of canvas and rubber and they have a thin, flexible sole. They are also cheaper than Adidas and other revered athletic brands.
You can also find kung fu shoes that are especially designed for children. They have different colors, styles and sizes. The most common are blue, black, red, white and pink. It is always better if you buy a high-quality pair for your little one as they provide better protection and they are durable. There are a lot of ways to look for the right pair of kung fu shoes. You can go to any athletic gear shops or you can surf the internet. Whether you are buying it for your child or for yourself, the most important thing to remember is you should buy a pair that is well-constructed, durable, flexible and comfortable.

I didn't realize they had these shoes available for kids. My boys have been going to Kung Fu barefoot. Thanks for the valuable info!
I do not do martial arts but i have been considering these for some time for low impact aerobics. Thanks! I was only aware of the Feiyue shoes. More choices!!
I have a friend that uses a similar type of shoe for running. He swears up and down that they are better for his feet.
