The Karate Suit Guide
68why a suit is important
Karate is a way of fighting with the use of our hands and feet without any weapons. This sport originated in Okinawa Island, Japan. The emperor at that time deemed the monks too weak, so they were taught training exercises to strengthen their physique. They chose to wear white robes to symbolize a pure state of mind and spirit. They call these white robes, gi. Wearing the right karate suit is as important as mastering the moves in karate. For them, to be properly dressed is a way of showing respect to their instructor, fellow karatekas and the martial art itself. A student that is not properly dressed will not be allowed to attend the class unless the instructor states otherwise.
taking care of your suit
Unlike the suit that you wear to a Kung Fu training, the karate training suit must be white and unmarked. A karateka is responsible in keeping it clean and smart-looking. If the suit gets any tear, it should be repaired. The top should be long enough to cover the hips. The sleeves must be at least half way down the forearm and it should not be rolled up. The trousers must be long enough to cover at least two-thirds of the shin. Badges are not allowed to be sewn on the suit unless to indicate membership of the BTKA or a team. It should be approved by the instructor and there should only be one badge per suit. The Washinkai Kanji must be imprinted on the left breast of the top. Only the women are allowed to wear a plain white shirt underneath the top. They should also wear a sports bra to protect their breasts. Students can purchase their gis from their instructors.
Consult an Instructor
It is important for a student to consult an instructor or sensei first before deciding on what type of karate suit he or she should buy. Instructors and experienced karatekas can point the right direction and guide a student through the process of buying the right gi. Karate students should remember that the suit should be light and loose to allow them to move quickly and freely. Heavyweight material is preferred over lightweight ones as they can last for a longer time. Lightweight karategi are easily ripped and can cause a feeling of discomfort after extensive perspiration. So if a student wants to be a serious karateka, it is better to buy something that’s a bit pricey yet durable and comfortable.
Karate Suit Styles
A karate suit is available in different styles as they are produced by different manufacturers as well. Adidas, Ki, Tokaido, Shuriedo and Century are just some of the brands that are revered when it comes to making karate gear. Ki suits are very reasonable in price as they offer a heavyweight material for only $50. Meijin is a bit more expensive than Ki. Tokaido and Shuriedo are usually worn during formal tournaments as they are considered a status symbol by karatekas. Their suits are quite expensive too. They also make the most durable type of karate suits. However, you don't have to spend other money on martial arts shoes or boxing gloves, so a karate Gi is all you need.

You are welcome! SY
If I may say so, heavyweight gis are definitely worth the price. Also, I find it pretty funny that gis are referred to as "karate suits"...we've always called them uniforms, but to each his own. Great article!
Okinawa was actually its own "kingdom" until it was conquered by the Japanese in the 1600s. The close proximity of the islands to Japan, China, and other nations made it a very prosperous trading center.
People closely associate Okinawa with Japan because of the WWII battle that was fought there... but that would be like saying Hawaii was always a part of the United States just because of Pearl Harbor.
Very useful, my daughter wants a new gi now - her sensei prefers them worn short showing ankles and forearms clearly, but all the karate exercise and she is shooting up in height!
